"In a music world of ‘junk food’ pop (quickly produced, poor quality and easily forgotten) I want to support alternative tracks I believe do deserve to be listened to"
Thickets is a three-piece alternative-folk band from London and ‘Taunt’ is their debut single, following the release of their eponymous EP two years ago, and it leaves quite a mark.
The opening bars of ‘Taunt’, although in a totally different key and genre, remind us a little of ‘Hold Tight’ from Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, but the similarity is soon forgotten as the song slow-builds from a delicate autoharp backdrop into something quite powerful and beautiful. The ethereal vocals and harmonies of Rebecca Lavery and Emma Hamilton deliver a dark tangle of sentimental lyrics and haunting melodies before Kieran Lavery’s drums blend with the uplifting sound of the cello and an urgent autoharp, to give the track a rousing finale. Then, when you are totally smitten it abruptly falls away all too soon.
